“…that’s what the library is for”
My wife is a professor of art and design history. Classes started for her last week, and she gave for each what I usually call “the syllabus lecture” in which she hands out the syllabus and takes questions from undergrads about expectations for the course.
One freshman asked: “Can we take notes on a laptop computer?”
My wife replied: “Of course, absolutely. I want you to take notes and use whatever tools best support this activity for you. However, I want to caution you not to be checking your email or surfing internet porn during my lectures…”
(Silence from flabbergasted freshmen)
“…that’s what the library is for.”
I thought this was funny, but am interested to hear from academic libraryfolk how they’d feel if they heard a professor at their institution made this joke in class. Please leave a comment if you have thoughts to share.

I just snorted milk out of my nose.
Seriously, ask your wife if I can steal that line for my classes.

Stew,
You are welcome to use my line — I am glad someone else thought it was amusing!
The funniest part is that I HAVE actually had students look at porn on their labtops during class.
